DHA and EPA that are difficult to meet with food alone

DHA and EPA, known as the smooth components of blue fish, are essential fatty acids that are abundantly contained in tuna, bonito, sardines, etc. The body cannot make enough of it.

The recommended daily intake of "n-3 fatty acids" such as DHA and EPA is 2.0g or more for adult men and 1.6g or more for adult women*1. If you try to consume this with the DHA contained in tuna, it will be equivalent to more than 14 servings of sashimi*2. The amount of seafood that Japanese people eat per day is decreasing, and in 2006 the intake of seafood and meat reversed. What is a food with functional claims?

Until now, the only foods that could be labeled as functional were ``Foods for Specified Health Uses'' (FOSHU), which were individually approved by the government, and ``Foods with Nutrient Functional Functions'' that met national standards. Therefore, the ``Foods with Function Claims'' system was started with the aim of increasing the number of products with easy-to-understand functional claims so that consumers can obtain accurate product information and make choices.

Foods with functional claims are foods that display functionality based on scientific evidence under the responsibility of the business operator. Before sales, information on the basis of safety and functionality must be submitted to the Commissioner of the Consumer Affairs Agency, and once the information is received, the food can be sold as a ``food with functional claims.'' However, unlike foods for specified health uses, they have not been individually approved by the Commissioner of the Consumer Affairs Agency.
