The difference from Renju and Gomoku, which similarly involve competing to line up pieces in a straight line, is that the space in which the balls are placed is three-dimensional rather than two-dimensional. The board on which 4-tac-toe is played has a grid of sticks standing vertically on it, with holes made in the center of two different colored balls, and the two players take turns placing their colored balls somewhere on these sticks. The key point of this game is that you can choose any location in the horizontal direction, but in the vertical direction, due to gravity, you can only place the ball on top of the ball that was placed first (or just above the board)!
