RACERS - Racers - Vol.75 (Sanei Mook)
Brand: Sanei Shobo
Details: '94-'99 Honda NSR500 Behind the scenes of complete invincibility
"Racers" Vol.75 features the Honda NSR500 that raced through the 20th century World GP.
The story begins in 1994. This season, Honda won the 500cc class title for the first time since 1989. Rider: Mick Doohan. Why couldn't he win the title for five years? One of the reasons was that the NSR500 had too much power and was not a bike that could be operated by a human. The idea that power equals good is a Honda engineering tradition passed down from the company's founder, Soichiro Honda. The 1994 NSR500 was created with the idea of ``making it more user-friendly,'' and this season turned out to be a perfect example. It was a very rare ``incident'' in Honda's long racing career to change the characteristics of an engine that was easy to handle and would win in actual races, rather than an unusable high-power engine calculated on a desk by engineers.
While revealing the behind-the-scenes of this incident, we will look back at the Honda NSR500's rapid progress that started from there, all the way to the 1999 model, which won all races in 1997 and achieved six consecutive victories.
